EARTH MONTH 2023: GARBAGE CLEANUPS GALORE!

Unfortunately we were rained out for the first time, for our Green Orillia Earth Day garbage cleanup this year. However, that didn’t stop the dedicated 50+ people who braved the storm to come out to our community cleanup.

Attendees split off around the city and collected litter based on high-priority areas we had identified in advance. Great to see people of all ages at the cleanup, especially so many young leaders!

A group of volunteers stayed back at the park at our sorting station and sorted the litter from garbage and recycling as it came in. It was a messy but effective process!

Here is our final count: 27 bags of garbage and 19 bags of recycling!

We were also pleased to have gotten media coverage for our event. Read the OrilliaMatters article here.

Finally, we would like to note that cleaning up garbage is a sort of band-aid solution to a more complex global problem of waste, and people can also help make a difference by advocating all levels of government to make urgent policy changes 🗑 visit our Civic Engagement page for government representative contacts in Orillia and Simcoe North.

We also wanted to highlight the numerous other amazing cleanup efforts around town that happened this spring:
